Add a text box

Draw a box on a page and type text into it.

A text box is a bordered box of your own text placed anywhere on a page.

Steps

  1. In the rail, choose Comment (or Edit), then Text box.
  2. Drag a box on the page where the text should go.
  3. Type your text straight into the box. It is shown in the size and colour it will have on the page.
  4. To finish, click anywhere else on the page or press Esc. Ctrl+Enter finishes too; Enter starts a new line.

While you type, Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U make words bold, italic or underlined. Select words first to change those, or press the key and keep typing to change the words that follow; press it again to stop. One box holds up to 16 differently styled stretches of words, and the box tells you when a style would go past that.

Good to know

  • If you finish without typing anything, no box is added.
  • Text box and Typewriter are in both the Edit and the Comment tabs; they are the same tools in either. A text box is a comment on top of the page. To add words that are part of the page itself, use Add text instead (see "Edit text on the page").
  • Select a text box and the Properties tab shows its Text (font, size, colour, style, alignment, line spacing) and its Box (border colour, opacity, width, padding and fill), with Comment details folded at the foot. The words themselves are changed on the page.
  • To choose the typeface new boxes start in, open Settings, choose Editing defaults and pick one under Annotation font, from the same font list as everywhere else. Helvetica, Times and Courier are in every PDF reader; any other font is put into the file, so the words look the same wherever it is opened. Typed text uses the same choice; a callout uses whichever of the three is closest to it.
  • Hebrew, Arabic and other languages work too: the letters appear in the right order, and Arabic letters are joined. Monstera draws them in a font it puts into the file, so they look the same in every reader.
  • For a language written from the right, open Settings, choose Editing defaults and pick Right to left under Text direction, so each line starts at the right edge of the box. Callouts and typed text use the same choice. Left to right is the default.
  • For text with no box around it, use "Type text onto a page".
  • To change the words later, right-click the box and choose Edit comment….
  • Undo with Ctrl+Z.
