Measure distance, area and perimeter

Measure lengths and areas on drawings, using a scale you set.

The measuring tools draw a line or shape and label it with its length or area. They are useful on plans and technical drawings.

Steps

  1. In the rail, choose Comment. In the Measure group, choose Distance, Area or Perimeter.
  2. In the Properties tab, choose the Measurement unit. For a drawing made to a scale, type it in Drawing scale, 1 to: 100 for a plan drawn at 1:100.
  3. For distance, drag from one end to the other. For area and perimeter, click each corner, then double-click on the last one or press Enter to finish. An area also closes when you click its first corner again. Esc finishes and keeps the measurement too.
  4. While you draw, the reading so far is shown beside the pointer. When you finish, it is written on the shape: along a distance, in the middle of an area, and beside a perimeter's longest side.

Good to know

  • With a drawing scale of 1, a measurement is the length on the page itself, in inches unless you choose another unit.
  • The unit and the scale are settings, not part of each document; change them when you move to a drawing with a different scale. They are also on the Settings window's Editing defaults page.
  • To change a measurement, choose Select and click it. Drag an end of a distance, or a corner of an area or perimeter, to move that point; drag the middle to move the whole shape. The reading and its comment are worked out again each time.
  • A measurement keeps the scale it was drawn with. Changing the unit or the scale changes the next one.
  • Measurements are saved in a form other PDF readers understand.
  • Undo with Ctrl+Z.
