Bates numbers are consecutive identifying numbers, such as ABC000431, stamped on each page, often used for legal documents.
Steps
- In the rail, choose Organize, then Bates numbering… in the Marks group.
- Fill in Prefix, Suffix, Start at and Digits. The window shows what the first number will look like.
- Choose where it goes: Top or Bottom, and Left, Centre or Right, and its Font: Helvetica, Times or Courier, which every PDF reader has, or any font on this computer, which is saved inside the PDF.
- Choose This page or All pages, then Number pages.
Change or remove Bates numbers
- In Organize, open Edit marks in the Marks group.
- Choose Edit Bates numbers… to open the same window with their settings filled in. Change what you want, then choose Apply changes. The pages that had numbers are numbered again from Start at.
- Or choose Remove Bates numbers to take them off every page. Everything else on the page stays as it was.
Both still work after the file is saved and opened again, and each is one step for Undo.
Good to know
- Bates numbers added by an earlier version of Monstera cannot be changed or removed. Monstera says so and leaves them.
- Start at lets a second document carry on from where the first finished.
- Digits is the minimum width; numbers are padded with zeros and never cut short.
- A page that shows nothing, because its visible area lies outside the page, is left without a number, and Monstera names it. It still counts, so the next page has the number it would have had.
- Undo with Ctrl+Z.
