Word count totals the words, characters and lines in the whole document.
Steps
- In the rail, choose Edit, then Word count in the Proofing group.
- Progress shows in the status bar; you can Cancel it.
- The Word count window shows a table of Pages, Words, Characters (with spaces), Characters (no spaces), Lines and CJK characters.
Good to know
- Words are counted properly in languages written without spaces, such as Chinese and Japanese.
- CJK characters counts the Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, without the punctuation those languages share.
- A line that holds only spaces is not counted as a line.
- Scanned pages count only once their text is recognised.
- If counting stops early, the window says the totals are incomplete.
