Check spelling

Go through the document a word at a time, see each word on the page, and replace it, ignore it or add it to your dictionary.

Spell check goes through the document's text a word at a time. Each word it does not recognise is shown in the Spelling tab of the panel on the right, and marked on the page.

Steps

  1. In the rail, choose Edit (or Review), then Spell check in the Proofing group.
  2. The Spelling tab opens and checks every page. You can Stop it while it reads.
  3. For each word, the tab shows where it is and the line it is on, and the page shows it marked.
  4. Choose a suggestion, or type the word you want in Change to.
  5. Choose Replace to change this word, or Replace all to change every place it is written exactly that way.
  6. Choose Ignore to leave it, Ignore all to leave it everywhere in this check, or Add to dictionary to stop it being flagged again.

Good to know

  • Under Also check, choose whether comments and form fields are checked too. Both are on unless you turn them off, here or in Settings.
  • Words are checked against English.
  • Words you add are kept in your personal dictionary and used in every later check.
  • A word is replaced where it is printed. If a word cannot be changed on its own there, for example because it is split across two pieces of text, the tab says so and nothing changes; use "Edit text on the page" to change the line.
  • In a signed document, replacing a word is treated like any other edit: you are warned first that it breaks the signatures, unless you have turned that warning off.
  • A comment or field too long to change here is still checked, and the tab says when one cannot be changed.
