Everything drawn on a page (text, shapes, pictures) is a separate object. Edit object outlines them on the page so you can change one where it is.
Steps
- In the rail, choose Edit, then Edit object in the Text group. It starts with Edit all objects, or with what you chose last. While it reads the page it says Finding objects…, then outlines the objects.
- To work on one kind only, use the arrow beside it: Edit all objects, Edit text objects, Edit images or Edit shapes. The menu marks the one that is on.
- Click an object to select it. Its outline turns solid, with its handles. A block of text is picked as one block, not letter by letter.
- Then:
- drag it to move it; the object itself moves with the pointer;
- drag a corner handle to resize it, the opposite corner staying where it is, or a side handle to make it only wider or only taller. A block of text has corner handles only, so its words keep their shape;
- in the Properties tab, on the right, change the colour of a shape or of a block of text;
- choose Bring forward or Send backward, in the Properties tab or by right-clicking it, to put it in front of or behind what overlaps it;
- or press Delete, or right-click it and choose Delete selection.
- Press Esc to clear the selection, and Esc again, or Edit object again, to finish.
Good to know
- Edit images includes pictures you placed yourself with Image in the Comment section, as well as the pictures that are part of the page.
- A Group is several objects the document keeps together. It moves and resizes as one.
- Each change rewrites only the object you changed. Nothing else on the page is written again.
- If a move would put an object where the page cuts it off, nothing is changed and Monstera says so.
- Pictures and groups keep their own colours; the Properties tab says so.
- To change the words themselves, use Edit text on the page.
- Every change can be undone with Ctrl+Z.
