Help Redaction, security and signing

Add a visible signature

Draw a box, then type, draw or use a picture of your signature, and sign with your certificate.

A visible signature shows your signature on the page and signs the document digitally at the same time. To put your signature on the page without a certificate, see "Add your signature".

Steps

  1. In the rail, choose Protect, then Signature & Certificate in the Signatures group.
  2. Drag a box where the signature should appear.
  3. In How the signature looks, choose:
    • Type it, then type your Signature and pick a Style; each style in the list shows your name in it, and the large preview shows it as it will be placed;
    • Draw it, then draw in Draw your signature here (Clear starts again);
    • Use a picture of it; you will pick a PNG or JPEG, or a scanned PDF of your signature, first;
    • Use one of my signatures, then pick one you kept earlier.
  4. Fill in the rest as in "Sign a document digitally", and choose Choose certificate and sign.

Which signature do I need?

  • Signature & Certificate (Protect): your signature shown on the page, and a digital signature from your certificate.
  • Sign with Certificate (Protect): the digital signature alone, with no mark on the page. See "Sign a document digitally".
  • Signature (Comment): only a picture of your signature. It is not a digital signature; no certificate is used.

Good to know

  • You still need a certificate file (.p12 or .pfx).
  • The signature appears upright even on turned pages.
  • There are fifteen styles, most of them handwriting. If a style cannot write a letter of your name, Monstera names the letter, and the list marks each style that cannot. The styles write Latin letters, and some write Cyrillic and Greek too; a name in Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese or Korean can be drawn or used as a picture.
  • A typed signature is drawn into the document as the shapes of its letters, so no font file is added to it.
  • To use a signature again next time, tick Keep this signature for next time when you type or draw it. It is kept once the document is signed.
  • Under Use one of my signatures, Add a picture… keeps a picture of your signature, and Remove takes one away. Kept signatures stay on this computer, and up to 16 are kept. Signatures saved with Signature appear here too.
