How to Split a PDF into Separate Files

Open the PDF in Monstera PDF Editor, choose Organize, then Split, pick One file for each page or type ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, and choose a folder. Monstera writes the new PDFs on your own PC and leaves the original document as it was. It is free and works offline.

Split, or just take a few pages?

Splitting cuts one document into several files at once: a long report into chapters, or a scanned batch into one file per page. If you only need a few pages as one new file, Extract pages is quicker, and it is covered at the end of this guide.

How to split a PDF in Monstera

  1. Open the PDF

Install Monstera free from the Microsoft Store and open the document you want to split.

  2. Open Split

In the rail, choose Organize, then Split in the Combine group.

  3. Choose how to split

Choose One file for each page, or One file for each range and type the Ranges, for example 1-3, 4-6.

  4. Choose a folder

The window says how many files it will write. Choose Choose a folder and pick where they should go.

How the new files are named

Each file is named after the document and the pages it holds, so a report split at pages 4 to 9 gives a file called Report 4-9.pdf. Monstera checks every name before it writes anything, and it will not overwrite a file that is open in another tab.

Take a few pages into one new PDF

To copy only some pages into a single new file, choose Organize, then Extract pages, or right-click a page. Type the pages, such as 1-3, 5, choose Extract to a new PDF and save. The new file keeps the pages' comments and form fields, and the document you started from is not changed.

Questions

Does splitting change the original PDF?

No. Split writes new files and leaves the document you split exactly as it was.

Can I split a PDF into ranges of pages?

Yes. Choose One file for each range and type the ranges, such as 1-3, 4-6. Each range becomes its own file.

Are my files uploaded to split them?

No. Monstera splits the document on your own computer and writes the files to a folder you choose. No internet connection is needed.
